With a background in political science, she specialises in power theories in relation to social change and innovation. She has a particular interest in understanding how people and networks are (dis)empowered to contribute to change and how power relations are being challenged and/or reproduced through translocal social movements striving for more just and sustainable futures.
As scientific coordinator of the TRANSIT project she was one of the initiators of the Transformative Social Innovation Manifesto. Currently she is involved in international research and innovation projects on sustainable and just cities (UrbanA) and social innovation in energy transitions (SONNET). Teaching is one of her main passions and as the previous academic director of the Transition Academy, she strives to co-create learning environments to challenge people to think and act for radical, transformative change to tackle the societal challenges of our times.
In 2020 she took up a new challenge as associate professor at the Department of Public Administration and Sociology at the Erasmus School of Social & Behavioural Sciences and as theme-lead Sustainable and Just Cities for the Vital Cities and Citizens initiative of the Erasmus University of Rotterdam. She combines this with her continued work at DRIFT.
In 2011, She concluded her PhD-thesis on Power in Transition (Cum Laude) at DRIFT, where she has been working ever since.
Besides her passion for research and education, Flor loves to walk, write, play board games and enjoy the little things in life.
